Why am I sharing my favorite witchy teas? Two years ago, I suffered from severe anxiety and panic attacks that overwhelmed me to the point of rushing myself to Urgent Care. I messaged my sister on the way to the hospital to let her know I might be dealing with an extreme health issue. My heart was pounding, my breath was racing, I felt like I was going to pass out. I did everything I could to settle myself down.
I went for a run. I tried to meditate. I ate a protein rich meal.
Nothing worked.
When I got to Urgent Care, the doctor checked my vitals and ran all the tests and told me definitively that I was having a panic attack. “Welcome to your 40s.” She said, not unkindly.
She also prescribed me two anti-anxiety medications, only one of which I picked up at the pharmacy, neither of which I ever took.
Not a Fan of Pharmaceuticals
I hate the idea of taking medicine. I come from a background of drug users and abusers, and I have always been averse to turning to pharmaceuticals to solve my problems. I genuinely believe that we are being sold our sicknesses.
What I did instead was to undergo a yearlong regimen to get my life, my mind, and my overall wellness under control.
People always ask what steps I took because the panic attacks are now gone, I lost 30 pounds, and I reached the height of health.
Well, one of those steps, which I continue to implement today, is taking herbs good for healing the body and calming the nervous system.
For those who don’t know, inflammation is at the root of all illness, and I believe that extends to mental and psychological illness as much as to the physical.
After much research, I concocted these two teas — Ginger Turmeric tea, which I take in the afternoon after lunch, and a Moon Milk tea, which my husband and I both drink after dinner.
And since I recently wrote a piece on how to stay well this winter, which included drinking all the tea, I thought I’d share.
Ginger Turmeric Tea
To make this tea, you’ll need:
Three inches of ginger
One inch of turmeric
Two cinnamon sticks
Dash of black or cayenne pepper to activate the turmeric
You don’t have to peel the skin off the ginger or turmeric, and you should chop it up into small chunks.
Add all of the ingredients to your stovetop tea kettle like this one filled with cold water and simmer it for a half an hour to an hour to fully extract all the benefits and flavor from your roots.
Some of the tea will cook off as it condenses. That’s okay. You get more flavor that way.
I leave this pot on my stove until the tea runs out, heating it up each day to ensure I’m not growing any local friendly yeasts on top.
I then add a heaping spoonful of honey and some lemon and enjoy it warm, or on a hot day, I’ll add ice.
Health Benefits of Ginger Turmeric Tea
I chose this tea because I had had COVID a few months prior to the panic attacks, and I suspected I might be struggling with inflammation of the brain, which is a common post-COVID side effect.
Ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon are all anti-inflammatory roots and bark.
They are also loaded with antioxidants, to clear free radicals out of your body, and anti-cancer properties (always good).
As a side benefit, ginger is good for your heart, digestion, blood sugar, and liver. And ladies, it can help with menstrual pain and nausea.
Turmeric also helps balance your metabolism, helps with anxiety, and is often used to ease sore muscles after exercise (I was exercising a lot to clear out the panic). It has also been shown to lower bad cholesterol.
And cinnamon has been used to heal neurological disorders.
By adding raw, local honey and lemon, I also give myself a daily dose of nutrients like vitamin C as well as the antibacterial and antifungal properties we can all use all year round.
Moon Milk Tea
I got the idea for my Moon Milk tea when experimenting with my own witchy teas. After researching various herbs for calming at night to get a good night’s sleep, I noticed lavender and passionflower came up repeatedly. I have never really had trouble sleeping, but my husband has, and I knew I could only benefit from a nighttime ritual.
To make this tea, you’ll need:
1 Tablespoon of dried lavender
1 Tablespoon of dried passionflower
2 teaspoons of ashwagandha root
Place all of your ingredients in a 32 oz. tea kettle with infuser like this one.
Bring water to a boil in a tea pot.
Pour the boiling water over the diffuser into the tea kettle and allow it to steep for 10 minutes
This usually makes about 3 large mugs of tea.
I then add a heaping spoonful of honey and a dash of grassfed organic whole milk, and I sleep like a baby.
Health Benefits of Moon Milk Tea
I chose this tea because lavender and passionflower are both well known for their calming effects.
Ashwagandha has been studied extensively for its anti-anxiety properties, making it a great addition to this recipe.
Be sure to start small with your ashwagandha and work your way up as it can have a powerful impact in small doses. (Note: this is a good idea any time you work with a new herb or root).
Passionflower has also been shown to increase levels of GABA in the brain, which helps lower the hyperactivity of your brain. We want all the GABA.
Of course, I’m not a doctor, and this is not a prescription. It is merely a helpful tip to try some witchy teas if you’re hoping to manage your own anxiety, stress, and panic.
It has worked wonders for me as part of my healing regimen, and I hope it does the same for you.
And so it is and so it is and so it is.
Have you tried any teas for anxiety, stress, or panic? What worked for you? Do you have any recipes you’d like to share? Let me know in the comments. Being a tea witch is one of my favorite parts of this witchy life.
